Some nice viewings here, Russ. If you'd like to share, I'm curious about your thoughts on La Notte and Voyage to Italy (I'm jealous over the latter). Also, how was Marie Antoinette?
ReplyDeleteFunny you should ask-- La Notte and VtI are cut from the same cloth in many ways. It was my first time with Antonioni's film and my third with Rosselini's (e-mail me your address). Besides the obvious plot similarities of well-to-do couples living alone within dying marriages, there's a really effective use of external realities to drive the wife character in each to finally confront the brokenness, at least within herself.
ReplyDeleteAt this point, VtI is my favorite of the two.
Marie Antoinette is an interesting film. Coppola's talented, to be sure, but if she was motivated to adapt Fraser's book in order to rehabilitate the queen's historical perception, as she says, I'm not sure whether the decision to play up her clotheshorsing and partying means that Coppola would think that we'd have a higher opnion of Marie if only we knew how much she liked to have fun. If so, wow.
Thanks for the comments, Russ. Interesting all-around. (And thanks for your generosity, too.) I've seen La Notte, and your comments about its similarities to VtI are very intriguing.
ReplyDeleteYour comment about Marie made me laugh. I'm planning to watch it soon. Now, can you help me get Cindy Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" out of my head?
Well, there is a montage of Marie and her entourage trying on shoes and eating fancy desserts set to the one Bow Wow Wow song that you're likely to know.
