The last few years we've helped put together a tailgating/Pirate game outing for Ali's ESL students and the college students who attend our church. I'm about to sit down to fill 40 sandwich bags with peanuts. I want to put on a movie to half-watch while I'm doing it. Ali suggests one of the three Netflix rentals sitting on top of the television. I demur because I don't want to watch one of those with half my attention. So I go to look for something we've seen before. Ten minutes later, I still can't decide.
Just put me out of my misery. Really.
And then, of course, I kill another five minutes blabbing about it on the internets.
Then again, the computer was already on because I've been rapidly downloading this trailer for the past hour. Trailers are pretty much worthless non-indicators, but there you go.
I like that trailer. But it makes me sad.
ReplyDeleteStory of my life these days. I usually have 2 or 3 movies on my mind to spin after dinner (tonight's choices were Shiri, The Untouchables, and Project A Part 2), but once I log on, I'm on it for hours. Then it's time for Stern on E! or Conan.
ReplyDeleteI love the prologue of SHIRI, and every minute of the other two you mentioned.
ReplyDeleteIs there anyone not rooting for LAND OF THE DEAD? If so, may I strap them into a coin-operated blood pressure measurer and rip their arm off?
The rest of SHIRI's aiight. All wannabe-Bruckheimer riffs aside, in many ways it was the movie that kickstarted the Korean film industry boom in the late 90s/early 00s. They've definitely gotten a lot slicker from a technical standpoint during the years since.
ReplyDeleteJeremy, you should've seen Project A Part 2 when it played at the Nuart Festival HK back in 1993. Awesome packed house crowd giving off tremendous waves of infectious energy. Still one of my favorite movie theater experiences of all time.
Land of the Dead - they missed out on featuring one badass zombie extra. Can't believe it's been 20 years since Day of the Dead. Yeah man, I am so there.
Yeah, the trailer leaves me somewhat conflicted. Dennis Hopper lends the film some acting accomplishment, but his performances are so sure to be over-the-top that I hope he has little screen time.
ReplyDeleteMike, I went with PHONE. Yeah, derivative.
It's my story too. Also, as I am under khitch's spell, most of the netflix flix I have are subtitled, so no half-attentive viewing there.
ReplyDeleteBTW, great blog, russ.
