  1. Hi Russ. I'm curious about McElwee. Would Charleen be a good place to start?

  2. Hi, Diane. I don't know. I've only seen Charleen and Bright Leaves, but I enjoyed both of them (and loved Bright Leaves), so they might be as good as any. I've also heard great things about Sherman's March.

  4. Good, but not great. I think Mills has directing talent, though. Interesting relationship dynamic between the kid and his parents. The Ritalin/speed stuff was well done.

  6. Really liked it. I hadn't seen one of Kurosawa's contemporary-set films since college, and had never seen HIGH AND LOW. It's two completely different movies, and the way in which the scenes are shot in the protag's apartment are as compelling as the ethical dilemma he faces. There are these fantastic compositions, with the police detectives standing to one side, facing away from the protag, who stands alone and turned the opposite way. The second half-- the police procedural-- is interesting in its own way.
