  1. What did you think of Spanglish? I had a fondness for it, I thought it got better as it went, and when it hits the sandwich scene I was won over.

  2. It certainly has one of the least tightly-wound plots of any big Hollywood release I've seen in a while, and that feature was alternately thrilling and frustrating. The upside was the film didn't have to do anything other than fit into those awkward bookends, but that kinda becomes a downside, too. Some good scenes, but a couple of bad ones.

Am I totally out of my mind to wonder whether Brooks hates women? Like, I imagine this screenplay as the result of being at his own gated house or at a friend's, and thinking to himself that the deferential No hablo ingles domestic understands him or his friend way better than his or his friend's shrill, botoxed wife does. How else to explain how almost ridiculously angelic Vega's character is, and how irredeemably one-dimensional and lousy Leoni's is? And the best part is, while she's an amazing woman, you don't have to listen to her talk! But I could be way off.

I'm glad to see Adam Sandler take another step toward becoming Today's Dennis Quaid.

  3. He has not always been terribly kind to his female characters, that's for sure. Also, he's really big on doomed romanticism, and showing up women for making terrible choices (this extends back to noteworthy episodes of MTM and TAXI). It's an interesting thesis.

You gonna watch PANTHER anytime soon?

  4. You mean the Black Panther movie, right? Not the impressionistic portrait of the great jungle cat?

Should I? I did just finish reading Tom Wolfe's Radical Chic.

  5. Sure! Do it as a double feature with THE WALKING DEAD!

    http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0114888/combined

I actually once saw that posted as a double feature at Toledo, OH's Sundance Kid Drive-In.

  7. I'm likely a moron, but I keep trying to figure out whether there's any connection between SPANGLISH and PANTHER.
